Adobe XD is a trademark of its respective owner.

What you gain

  • No Creative Cloud subscription required for UI design
  • Full ownership of design files without Adobe's cloud storage
  • No vendor lock-in to Adobe's discontinuation decisions
  • Community-driven development with transparent roadmap

What you give up

  • No Creative Cloud integration with Photoshop and Illustrator assets
  • No Adobe Fonts library integrated into the design tool
  • No built-in voice prototyping and auto-animate transitions
  • No managed cloud documents with version history

Switching Cost

Adobe XD has limited lock-in, especially since Adobe has effectively sunset the product. XD files export to SVG and PNG, though interactive prototypes and component states don't transfer cleanly. Most teams should be migrating away regardless of the open source question. The migration itself takes a few days to rebuild components in a new tool. The hidden cost is the Adobe ecosystem: if your designers live in Photoshop and Illustrator, losing the native asset pipeline between those apps and your UI tool adds friction.

Building Blocks

Adobe XD is a platform. It bundles multiple capabilities into one subscription. These tools each cover one piece. Teams often assemble 2–3 of them instead of paying for the full suite.
