What you gain

  • No credit-based pricing that scales with compute and storage separately
  • Full control over data warehouse compute without per-second billing
  • No vendor lock-in on your analytics data
  • Self-hosted deployment without Snowflake's cloud markup

What you give up

  • No automatic scaling of virtual warehouses with zero management
  • No Snowflake Data Sharing for zero-copy cross-account data access
  • No Time Travel for querying historical data states up to 90 days
  • No Snowpark for running Python/Java/Scala directly in the warehouse

Switching Cost

Snowflake's lock-in is the compute model and data sharing ecosystem. Your data exports to Parquet, but the virtual warehouse scaling, Time Travel, zero-copy data sharing, and Snowpark code need alternatives. Teams with basic analytics can migrate in 1-2 weeks. Teams in the Snowflake Data Sharing ecosystem (receiving data from partners via data shares) face a bigger challenge since that data access mechanism doesn't exist elsewhere. The hidden cost is the auto-scaling: Snowflake's per-second compute billing with automatic suspension means you only pay when queries run, and replicating that efficiency is hard.

Building Blocks

Snowflake is a platform. It bundles multiple capabilities into one subscription. These tools each cover one piece. Teams often assemble 2–3 of them instead of paying for the full suite.
