What you gain

  • ✓No annual contract: Vendr puts the median Vanta deal at about $20,000 a year, while probo and CISO Assistant self-host for free
  • ✓No per-framework upsell: CISO Assistant ships 220+ frameworks with controls mapped between them, while Vanta's Essentials plan covers one
  • ✓The code that decides whether a control passes is open, so you can show an auditor exactly what a check does
  • ✓Policies, evidence and audit history stay in your own database instead of an account that closes when the contract ends

What you give up

  • △No round-the-clock cloud configuration tests: Vanta checks settings across AWS, Azure and GCP, probo has no config checks, and CISO Assistant only takes results you push in
  • △No HR system sync, so hires, departures and background checks get tracked by hand
  • △No auditor network: you find your own audit firm and walk them through a tool they have never seen
  • △Vanta's 400+ integrations shrink to probo's roughly 80 access-review connectors

Switching Cost

Vanta locks you in through your audit calendar, not your data. Policies are documents you can take with you, and controls are a list you can rebuild. The hard part is the automated checks Vanta runs every day against AWS, Azure, GCP, your identity provider and your HR system, and the evidence trail those checks build for your auditor. Neither open source option replaces all of it. probo pulls users and permissions from about 80 services for access reviews and ships a signed device agent that checks laptops for disk encryption, screen lock and firewall, but it has no cloud configuration tests and no HR connectors. CISO Assistant brings the big framework library and the risk register, then waits for you to push evidence in.

Vanta publishes no prices. Its pricing page tells you to request a demo for personalized pricing, and Vendr, which negotiates SaaS contracts for buyers, puts the median Vanta deal at about $20,000 a year across 375 purchases. A seed-stage startup chasing its first SOC 2, with one engineer comfortable in Docker, can have probo running in a day and the program rebuilt in two to three weeks. A company carrying SOC 2, ISO 27001 and HIPAA at once should budget one to two months, plus scripts or exported scanner reports to stand in for Vanta's cloud tests. Switch right after an audit report lands, never in the middle of a SOC 2 Type 2 observation window, or you will be stitching one audit's evidence together from two systems.

The hidden cost is the person. Vanta's value to a small team is that it tells a non-specialist what to fix next. Self-hosted, someone on your team becomes both the compliance engineer and the server admin: probo's production setup runs Postgres, SeaweedFS object storage and headless Chrome, and its Postgres config alone asks for 4 GB of shared buffers. The auditor's fee is separate either way. If you want people doing the work instead of software, probo also sells a managed compliance-officer service and a hosted Probo Cloud, but neither has a published price, so you are back to asking for a quote.
