Our Analysis

NocoDB65.3k★

NocoDB turns any database into an Airtable-like interface with relations, forms, API access, and automations. Connect it to your existing Postgres, MySQL, or SQLite and you get a spreadsheet UI on top of your real data. No migration, no data lock-in. The core product is strong: grid views, gallery views, kanban boards, a form builder, an auto-generated REST API for every table, and role-based access control. It replaces Airtable for most use cases, and the data stays in a database you control. Self-hosted is free under AGPLv3 with no seat or record caps. NocoDB Cloud has a free tier at 3 editor seats, 1,000 records, and 1GB of storage, then paid plans from $12 per seat/mo or $108/mo for unlimited seats. Baserow is the main open source alternative, MIT licensed and actively developed. If you already pay for Airtable and it works, switching is only worth it when self-hosting matters to you. The catch: the license moved off MIT to AGPLv3, so read the terms before embedding it in a commercial product. Performance still gets sluggish past roughly 100,000 rows in a single view, and the built-in automations are basic next to what you would build in n8n or Zapier.

teable21.9k★

Teable is a Postgres-native Airtable alternative built for speed. The data lives in real Postgres tables, which means SQL tooling works on your data natively. Fast. Modern UI. AGPL-licensed, free to self-host. Docker deployment. Lightweight and fast to start. Because data is in Postgres directly, you can query it with any BI tool or run migrations alongside your application schema. The frontend is React-based and noticeably faster than Airtable for large datasets. Engineering-leaning teams that want spreadsheet-style data management but refuse to give up direct database access will find this compelling. The Postgres-native architecture is the core differentiator: your data is not locked in a proprietary format. The catch: AGPL licensing means modifications require disclosure if distributed. The ecosystem is young: fewer integrations, fewer third-party tools, less community documentation than Airtable or NocoDB.

grist-core12.0k★

Grist is a spreadsheet-database hybrid. Rows are records, columns are typed fields, and formulas are Python. You get the layout flexibility of a spreadsheet with the structure of a relational database, without the proprietary lock-in of Airtable. Apache-licensed, free to self-host. Docker single-container deployment. It runs comfortably on a small VPS. The Python formula language is genuinely powerful. Access rules let you share specific views of data with external users or clients without exposing everything. Teams that outgrew Excel but find Airtable too restrictive or too expensive for their use case should evaluate Grist. The Python formula support is the differentiator: real computation, not just cell references. The catch: the UI is less polished than Airtable and the mobile experience is limited. It looks and feels like productivity software from 2018. The underlying data model is excellent; the surface needs work.

baserow6.2k★

Baserow is a no-code database builder you can self-host. It looks like Airtable: tables, views, forms, linked records, and a clean grid interface. All the common field types. Django-powered backend, MIT-licensed. Docker Compose deployment is straightforward. The application server, Celery workers, and Postgres database all spin up together. Reasonably lightweight. The API is REST-based and documented. Premium features (more views, more storage, SAML) are on paid tiers but the free self-hosted version covers most teams. Teams replacing Airtable or looking for a self-hosted no-code database platform get a clean, functional tool here. Non-technical users can use it without training. The Airtable similarity is intentional and works well for onboarding teams. The catch: it does not have Airtable's automation builder or third-party integration depth. It is primarily a database with views, not a workflow automation tool. Import from Airtable exists but expect cleanup work.
