The Lens

Everything is Puter's attempt to rebuild Office, Slack, Photoshop and AutoCAD as free browser apps under one MIT license. It's a monorepo, not one tool: spreadsheet, documents, slides, team chat, email, CRM, invoicing, CAD, a video editor, even chess. The spreadsheet is furthest along: real .xlsx files and a README claiming over 510 formula functions.

Running one is npm install and npm run dev in that app's folder, on Node 22.12 or newer. The apps load Puter's SDK from js.puter.com, so sign-in and saved files go to a Puter account. The README doesn't cover pointing them at your own server. Puter itself self-hosts under AGPL, but that wiring is on you.

A free Puter account gets 25 MB of storage. Basic is $10/month for 100 GB, Plus $25/month, Pro $100/month, and Puter's pricing page sells these same apps as the subscription. Solo: try the demos. Small teams: don't move your books or chat here yet. Larger teams: not a candidate.

The catch: the code landed in a bulk import on October 13, nearly all from one committer. A wall of demos isn't a suite. For real work, LibreOffice, Mattermost and Penpot have years of users behind them.

Free vs Self-Hosted vs Paid

free self hosted paid cloud

Free: All app source is MIT-licensed (Copyright Puter Technologies Inc.). Most apps have a public demo you can use without signing in; Puter asks for a sign-in at the first action that needs the cloud, such as saving. A free Puter account includes 25 MB of storage and "Limited AI & Cloud."

Self-hosted: Each app is a Vite project: npm install then npm run dev in src/<app>, Node.js 22.12 or newer. The frontends load Puter's SDK from https://js.puter.com/v2/ and store files and data in the signed-in user's Puter account (the email app only sends from a @puter.email address). The repo doesn't document running against a self-hosted Puter server; Puter's own server is separately available under AGPL-3.0.

Paid: puter.com plans, billed monthly: Basic $10/month (100 GB storage, Expanded AI & Cloud), Plus $25/month (500 GB, Advanced AI & Cloud, Expanded Support), Pro $100/month (2 TB, Maximum AI & Cloud). Puter's pricing page states every paid plan unlocks every app it lists.

The code is free, but out of the box your data lives on puter.com, where the free account holds 25 MB and paid plans run $10, $25 or $100 a month.

What to do by team size

Solo
free; try the demos and keep your files exportable
Small team
free to evaluate, but don't move accounting, chat or email onto week-old apps
Medium team
not yet; no track record and no documented self-hosted backend
Large team
not a candidate today
