GenOffice is a desktop office suite (documents, spreadsheets, presentations, PDF) with AI editing built into the core workflow instead of bolted onto a sidebar. It reads and writes Microsoft formats, including byte-preserving .docx round-trips, and does real PDF editing, not just annotation. The code is Apache 2.0, the app is a free download, and local document editing costs nothing.

There's nothing to host: prebuilt installers cover macOS, Windows, and Linux, and you can build from source (it's a real codebase, not a shell around a download). AI edits are block-level with snapshots and diffs, so you can review and revert what the model changed rather than trusting it blindly.

As a free local Office alternative it's adoptable today, closest in spirit to OnlyOffice. Solo and small teams can use the editor for free; budget Genspark Plus at $24.99/mo if the AI is the point. If you need AI on your own API keys or fully offline, this isn't it: every model call routes through Genspark's proxy and account system.

The catch is in what the README doesn't say: every AI feature burns Genspark credits. The free account's 100 credits a day is a trial allowance, not a working budget, and an ee/ directory already reserves space for a paid enterprise edition. The office suite is free. The thing that makes it different is metered.

Free vs Self-Hosted vs Paid

freemium

Free: The app (macOS, Windows, Linux), all local document editing, no ads, no watermarks. Apache 2.0 code with a reserved ee/ directory for future enterprise modules.

The meter: All AI features consume Genspark credits. Free accounts get 100 credits/day. Plus is $24.99/mo ($19.99 annual) for 10,000 credits/month; Pro is $249.99/mo for 125,000. Unused monthly credits don't roll over. Top-ups start at $20 per 10,000.

No BYO keys: Models route through Genspark's proxy across Claude, GPT, and Gemini families. You can't point it at your own API keys or run AI offline, so self-hosting the app never self-hosts the intelligence.

The office suite is free. The AI that makes it different burns Genspark credits, and 100 a day is a trial, not a budget.
