OpenCLI turns websites into terminal commands and lets an AI agent drive your logged-in Chrome. Built-in adapters like opencli hackernews top return tables or JSON, and opencli browser commands let an agent navigate, click, fill forms and extract from any page without an adapter. It's free and Apache 2.0.
Setup is an npm install plus the Browser Bridge Chrome extension, which talks to a local daemon and drives separate Chrome windows that reuse your site logins. Agents get it through skills (npx skills add jackwener/opencli). The adapter list covers 100+ sites with a heavy lean toward Chinese platforms like Bilibili, Zhihu and Xiaohongshu. The optional OpenCLIApp tray app is closed source.
There's no paid tier. You pay only for the LLM tokens your agent spends. Solo and small teams: free, for automating your own accounts. Larger teams: it's per-person tooling, not shared infrastructure; for headless browsers at scale, look at Browserbase.
The catch: an agent in your logged-in browser can do anything you can on every site you're signed into. The extension requests debugger, cookie and all-sites access to do it. It also sheds features fast: the CLI hub and desktop-app automation were cut from the main branch this fall.
Free vs Self-Hosted vs Paid
fully freeFree: Everything: the CLI, the Browser Bridge extension, the built-in adapters, the agent skills and the plugin system, all Apache 2.0.
Self-hosted: Runs on your own machine. npm install -g @jackwener/opencli (Node.js 20.18.1 or later) or OpenCLIApp (macOS Apple Silicon signed and notarized .pkg, Windows x64 unsigned installer; app source not public). Install the extension from the Chrome Web Store or load the unpacked zip from GitHub Releases; it talks to a local daemon on localhost:19825. Video downloads need yt-dlp.
Paid: No paid tier and no hosted version. The only cost is the LLM tokens of whatever agent (Claude Code, Cursor, etc.) drives it.
Free with no paid tier. The only bill is the LLM tokens your agent spends driving it.
What to do by team size
- Solo
- free; CLI plus the Chrome extension on your own machine
- Small team
- free; each person runs it against their own logged-in browser
- Medium team
- free, but it's per-user tooling; never share one logged-in Chrome profile
- Large team
- free, though security should vet an extension with debugger, cookie and all-sites access before rollout
