World Monitor is a live world-events dashboard: conflicts, disasters, flights, ships, markets and news on a 3D globe or flat map, with AI-written briefs on top. The code is AGPL-3.0 and free to run yourself, and the hosted site has a free tier.
Trying it is clone, npm install, npm run dev, with no environment variables. A useful install is more work: the Docker stack wants Node 22, Redis, four generated secrets and a seed-script run, because panels stay blank until the seeders fill Redis. Many feeds need their own free API keys, and the briefs run on Ollama or any OpenAI-compatible endpoint.
The hosted Free plan gets core panels and 3 dashboard tabs. Pro is $39.99/month or $359.99/year for the analyst chat, digests and alerts, licensed to one person. Client work needs Pro Business at $49.99/month; the API runs $99.99 to $299.99/month. Solo: free or self-host. Small teams: self-host with your own keys. Larger teams: Enterprise, priced by sales.
The catch: the AI briefs are leads to verify, not intelligence. And self-hosting frees the code, not the data. Every upstream source keeps its own terms, and Cloudflare's outage feed is paid.
Free vs Self-Hosted vs Paid
open coreFree: The dashboard source is AGPL-3.0-only, and the hosted worldmonitor.app has a $0 Free plan: core panels, the global news feed, earthquake and weather alerts, a basic map view and 3 dashboard tabs. The official CLI and Python, Ruby and Go SDKs are MIT.
Self-hosted: npm run dev runs with no keys. The Docker stack (nginx plus the Node API, Redis, a Redis REST proxy and an AIS relay) needs Node 22+, four generated secrets and the seed scripts. Most sources are keyless or free signup (FRED, EIA, NASA FIRMS, Finnhub, ACLED, OpenRouter); Cloudflare Radar outage data is paid. Premium routes on your own stack unlock with an operator key you set in WORLDMONITOR_VALID_KEYS, which the code treats as an enterprise key that skips the billing check. Local LLMs work through any OpenAI-compatible endpoint.
Paid: Hosted plans, billed monthly or annually (annual saves 25%). Pro $39.99/month or $359.99/year: personal license, 1 named user, analyst chat, AI digest, alert rules, 50 MCP/SDK calls a day, 10 dashboards. Pro Business $49.99/month or $449.99/year: commercial license, CSV/JSON/PDF export, 250 calls a day, still 1 named user. API Starter $99.99/month or $899.99/year: 1,000 requests a day at 60 a minute. API Business $299.99/month or $2,699.99/year: 10,000 requests a day, redistribution rights, 5 Pro licenses. Enterprise is custom: SAML SSO, SCIM, SLA, on-prem or air-gapped deployment.
Self-hosting is free under AGPL if you bring your own data keys. Hosted Pro is $39.99/month for one person's personal use; client or team work starts at Pro Business ($49.99/month) or the API ($99.99/month).
