Manticore Search is a database built for search: the engine behind a site's search box, a log explorer, or "find by meaning" lookups for AI apps. It started in 2017 as a continuation of the Sphinx engine and now aims straight at Elasticsearch, with full-text, vector and hybrid search, and SQL as its native language. It's GPLv3 and free, with no paid edition.

Setup is light. A one-line installer or a single docker run gets you going, and an empty instance sits around 40MB of memory, a fraction of what Elasticsearch wants. Replication, sharding, backups and MySQL or Postgres sync are built in. Auto-embeddings run local models free, or call OpenAI, Voyage or Jina with your key.

Solo and small teams: free, and cheap to host. Larger teams: still free; the only thing for sale is support (SLAs, custom features), quoted on request.

The catch: authentication is off until you turn it on, so a default install answers anyone who can reach the port. It also isn't a drop-in Elasticsearch. Only writes are compatible and Kibana support stops at 7.x, so plan on porting queries. For a simple site search box, Meilisearch or Typesense is less work.

Free vs Self-Hosted vs Paid

fully free

Free: The whole engine is GPLv3: full-text, vector and hybrid search, auto-embeddings, columnar storage, replication, sharded tables, authentication and backup are all in the open source build. There is no paid or enterprise edition of the software. Community support runs through the forum, public Slack, Telegram and GitHub, and the core team offers a free config review.

Self-hosted: Install via a one-line script (curl https://manticoresearch.com | sh), APT/YUM repos, Homebrew, or the manticoresearch/manticore Docker image. An empty instance uses about 40MB RSS. Auto-embeddings can run local Hugging Face models (no API key) or remote OpenAI, Voyage and Jina models, which bill you through your own API key. Authentication is disabled until you set auth in the searchd config.

Paid: No hosted cloud from Manticore itself. Manticore Software sells Standard and Enterprise support subscriptions (SLA response times, Technical Account Manager, expedited bug fixing; Enterprise adds a private chat, feature engineering and custom private branch maintenance) plus one-off audits and consulting, all priced on enquiry. Third-party hosts such as Elestio, DINAO and WZ-IT offer managed instances.

Free at any scale: there is no paid edition of the software. Money only enters if you want an SLA or custom features from the core team, and those support plans are quote-only.

Small team
free; small footprint keeps hosting cheap
Medium team
free; turn on auth and replication before production
