The Lens

By Erik Loyd, SaaS CEO and former COO/CFO of an AWS Premier Partner.

Updated Oct 2026

Okou (formerly VM0) is an AI employee you @mention in Slack: give it a job and it runs the steps across Gmail, Notion, HubSpot, Linear and thousands of other connectors, each task in its own Firecracker microVM. Emails land as unsent drafts for a human to approve.

The README says open source. It isn't. The Business Source License 1.1 allows internal use but bans offering it to others as an agent infrastructure service, and each version turns Apache 2.0 after four years. There's no self-hosting guide, and the dev setup assumes the team's own 1Password, Clerk and Cloudflare R2 accounts. It's a SaaS with the source on display.

Free gets 1,000 credits that expire in 30 days and 2 concurrent runs. Pro starts at $20 a month per member package ($20 to $200), Team at $180 a month ($160 plan fee plus packages). Solo: try the free tier. Small teams in Slack: Pro. To own it outright, self-host n8n or Activepieces.

The catch: you're giving an agent OAuth access to your email and CRM before the SOC 2 Type II report exists (Okou expects it in Q4 2026). Credit metering also makes the bill hard to predict.

Free vs Self-Hosted vs Paid

source available

Free: $0 with 1,000 credits valid for 30 days, 2 concurrent runs, all connectors, and the option to connect your own Claude or Codex subscription.

Self-hosted: Source is published under BSL 1.1, but there is no documented self-host path. The contributor setup depends on the team's internal services, and task isolation uses Firecracker microVMs that need KVM hosts. Treat it as SaaS.

Paid: Pro from $20/month (no plan fee; each member buys a monthly package of $20, $50, $100 or $200 worth of credits), with 3 concurrent runs and bring-your-own LLM keys. Team from $180/month ($160 plan fee plus member packages), 10 concurrent runs, priority support. Enterprise is custom with SLA and annual billing. Top-ups are $1 per 1,000 credits and never expire; monthly package credits expire at the end of each billing period. Org API keys and gateways need a paid plan.

Source-available SaaS, not open source. Free trial credits expire in 30 days; real use starts at $20 per member per month and climbs with credit burn.
