SnapmakerU1-Extended-Firmware is a community firmware for the Snapmaker U1, a four-toolhead 3D printer, that opens up the stock system into a Klipper setup you actually control. You get a choice of Fluidd or Mainsail web dashboards, WebRTC camera streaming, a remote view of the touchscreen, Spoolman filament tracking with RFID tags, and SSH. It's free under GPLv3.
Installing it works like a stock update: copy the .bin to a FAT32 USB stick and pick Local Update on the printer. Reverting is the same with Snapmaker's official file. Release images are built by GitHub Actions from Snapmaker's own firmware, checked against a pinned SHA-256, with checksums in every release. That's about as clean as custom firmware gets. Snapmaker gave it a first prize in its Innovation Fund this month. Solo makers to print farms: free. Optional add-ons like Tailscale and OctoEverywhere download on demand and carry their own pricing.
The catch: installing it doesn't void the warranty, but Snapmaker won't cover damage it causes, and the Max Speed tweak pushes motion limits past stock. SSH ships with the root password snapmaker, so change it. And reproduce every bug on stock firmware before reporting it.
Free vs Self-Hosted vs Paid
fully freeFree: Everything. The project's code is GPLv3 and prebuilt .bin images are on GitHub Releases. Latest release v2.0.0-paxx12-23 (October 19, 2026), based on Snapmaker's stock 2.0.0 firmware.
Self-hosted: Runs on the printer itself. Install from a FAT32 USB stick via Settings > About > Firmware Version > Local Update; revert the same way with Snapmaker's official file. Building from source needs Docker and downloads the stock image from Snapmaker's servers, verified against a pinned SHA-256.
Paid: No paid tier. Optional third-party services (OctoEverywhere remote access, Tailscale VPN) are downloaded only when you enable them and have their own plans. The maintainer takes Buy Me a Coffee donations and the README carries Snapmaker store referral links with a discount code.
Free. The only money involved is the printer and any optional remote-access service you choose to bolt on.
What to do by team size
- Solo
- free; flash from a USB stick, revert the same way
- Small team
- free; Spoolman and camera streaming make a shared printer easier to run
- Medium team
- free; Prometheus monitoring helps across several U1s
- Large team
- free, but no vendor support for custom firmware; keep the stock image ready to reflash
