FigCraft is a from-scratch Figma lookalike written in Rust: frames, auto layout, components and variants, vector networks, styles, variables and clickable prototypes, in a native, offline app. It's free under MIT or Apache-2.0, with no account and no telemetry, and your files are plain .figcraft archives on your own disk.

Grab a release for any desktop OS, or run it in the browser. Real-time collaboration is a preview: share through the default public server or run your own figcraft-server. There are no accounts, so whoever has the link has access, and the server stores files unencrypted. A CLI and MCP server expose 400+ commands to AI agents.

No paid tier. Solo designers and developers who want offline mockups: free, try it. Small teams living in Figma multiplayer: not yet; Penpot is the more mature open source pick. Larger teams: no accounts, so no SSO or permissions.

The catch: Figma's .fig files open best effort only, and the project says that path hasn't been checked against real-world files. The maintainers rate it about half ready for real work, and its first version was built by parallel AI agents in about 25 hours. Test your own files before trusting it.

Free vs Self-Hosted vs Paid

fully free

Free: Everything in the app. Dual-licensed MIT OR Apache-2.0, no account, no telemetry. Installers for macOS (universal, signed and notarized), Windows (x64, x86, arm64), Linux (AppImage, deb, rpm, Flatpak, tarball), FreeBSD and the web. The default public collaboration server (collab.craftapps.dev) is free but offered as is, with no backups or uptime promises, and deletes files nobody has opened for 30 days.

Self-hosted: figcraft-server (preview) ships for Linux and keeps a team's files, share links, join codes and team libraries. No accounts yet: links are the access. Files are stored unencrypted on the server; TLS covers transport. You run it on your own Linux box behind wss://.

Paid: No paid tier. Versus Figma, the savings are real but you give up mature multiplayer, permissions and verified .fig round trips.

Free, app and server alike. The cost is maturity: collaboration is a preview with link-only access, and .fig import is unverified on real-world files.

What to do by team size

Solo
free; offline UI mockups and prototypes with no subscription
Small team
free to try, but link-only sharing and preview collaboration make Penpot or Figma safer for client work
Medium team
not yet; no accounts, roles or SSO on the server
Large team
not yet; stay on Figma (or self-hosted Penpot) for permissions, audit and libraries at scale
Self-hosting ops:trivial
