Updated May 2026

What you gain

  • No AWS markup on model inference pricing
  • Run models without tying AI workloads to your AWS bill
  • Full control over model serving infrastructure and scaling
  • No dependency on AWS regions for model availability

What you give up

  • No single API for Claude, Llama, Mistral, and Titan models
  • No managed Guardrails for content filtering across models
  • No Knowledge Bases with automatic RAG pipeline setup
  • No seamless integration with S3, Lambda, and other AWS services

Switching Cost

Bedrock's lock-in is the AWS ecosystem, not the models. The models themselves (Claude, Llama, Mistral) are available elsewhere. What you lose is the unified API that lets you swap models with one parameter change, plus the managed RAG pipeline and Guardrails. Teams already deep in AWS will miss the native S3/Lambda integration. Solo devs can switch to direct model APIs in a day. Enterprise teams with Guardrails and Knowledge Bases configured should budget 1-2 weeks to replicate the orchestration layer.
