What you gain

  • Full ownership of your workspace data without cloud dependency
  • No per-seat pricing starting at $8-15/member/mo
  • No AI add-on charge ($8/member/mo for Notion AI)
  • Self-hosted deployment with custom access control

What you give up

  • No unified workspace combining docs, databases, wikis, and projects
  • No Notion AI for summarization, writing, and Q&A across your workspace
  • No database views (table, board, calendar, gallery, timeline) with relations
  • No synced blocks and cross-page transclusion

Switching Cost

Notion exports to Markdown, but the results are messy. Databases export as CSV (you lose relations, rollups, and formulas). Embedded content, synced blocks, and API integrations don't transfer. For teams using Notion as a wiki, migration takes a weekend. For teams using it as a project management system with linked databases, you're looking at weeks of manual restructuring. The bigger issue is workflow: everyone on the team knows Notion. Retraining is the hidden cost.
