Open Source Alternatives
Managed ELT platform that automatically syncs data from hundreds of sources into your data warehouse.

Fivetran's lock-in is operational, not data: the rows already sit in your warehouse. What you give up is the part you never saw, the managed connectors that handle API changes, schema drift, and retries without you noticing. Airbyte covers most of the same sources, but now you run the sync layer. Small teams moving a handful of connectors can switch in a few days. Teams relying on dozens of Fivetran connectors with heavy schema-drift handling should budget weeks and expect to babysit syncs that used to be silent. The hidden cost is the on-call rotation that inherits a job a vendor used to own.

Airbyte replaces the core of Fivetran: pull from a source, load into your warehouse, sync on a schedule. What it does not replace is the part Fivetran sells, connectors that someone else keeps working when an API changes. Self-host if your sources are common and stable and you have someone to run the syncs. Pay Fivetran if you depend on long-tail connectors and cannot afford a broken sync nobody is watching.
Fivetran is a platform. It bundles multiple capabilities into one subscription. These tools each cover one piece. Teams often assemble 2–3 of them instead of paying for the full suite.
