Open Source Alternatives
AI video and audio editor where you edit media by editing its transcript like a text document.
Descript is a trademark of its respective owner.

Descript doesn't lock your media, it locks your workflow. The files export, but the whole way you edit, by deleting words in a transcript, has exactly one live open source take, Rescript, and it is weeks old and licensed for noncommercial use only. Most editors relearn timeline cutting from scratch and stitch together a separate Whisper pipeline just to get transcripts back. A solo creator editing short clips can move in a day or two. A team built around the transcript workflow should budget a week or more to retrain and rebuild. The hidden cost is the paradigm, not the tool.

Nothing open covers Descript in one piece: the transcript-driven cut, screen recording, Studio Sound, AI voice, and a shared review flow. Rescript does the signature trick, deleting words to delete footage, and it does it offline for free, but its noncommercial license rules out paid work and the project is weeks old. Cap and Recordly cover the recording half, Auto-Editor and the rest cover one cleanup job each. If your editing is a hobby, stack two or three of these and you are most of the way there. If the video makes money, keep paying Descript for now and watch Rescript.
Descript is a platform. It bundles multiple capabilities into one subscription. These tools each cover one piece. Teams often assemble 2–3 of them instead of paying for the full suite.
