Switching Cost

Jamf's lock-in is Apple's, not Jamf's. Devices enroll through Apple Business Manager, so re-enrolling a fleet means touching every machine unless you can push the change before wiping. Expect a device-by-device migration window rather than a cutover. Fleet handles enrollment and configuration profiles fine, and its osquery layer gives you better inventory queries than Jamf's reports. MicroMDM, the older open source option, stopped getting security fixes at the end of 2025, so don't start a migration on it. What you lose is the thing Jamf actually earns its money on, which is being ready the day Apple ships a new OS. Shops under 25 Macs save the most, since that is Jamf's paid minimum.

Fleet speaks Apple's MDM protocol and covers enrollment, profiles and inventory. What they do not cover is Jamf being ready the morning Apple ships a new OS. Jamf's real product is that release-day readiness plus Protect and Connect. Run open source if you have someone who follows Apple's developer betas. Pay Jamf if a broken enrollment on release day would stop your company.
