What you gain

  • No per-device fee on a Mac fleet that only needs enrollment and config
  • Query every machine with SQL instead of Jamf's canned report builder
  • No 25-device minimum before you can start
  • Run the MDM server inside your own network for compliance

What you give up

  • No Jamf Protect equivalent for macOS threat detection
  • Day-one support for new macOS and iOS releases is not guaranteed
  • No Jamf Connect for identity and password sync at the login window
  • You build the Apple VPP and App Store distribution workflows yourself

Switching Cost

Jamf's lock-in is Apple's, not Jamf's. Devices enroll through Apple Business Manager, so re-enrolling a fleet means touching every machine unless you can push the change before wiping. Expect a device-by-device migration window rather than a cutover. MicroMDM and Fleet handle enrollment and configuration profiles fine, and Fleet's osquery layer gives you better inventory queries than Jamf's reports. What you lose is the thing Jamf actually earns its money on, which is being ready the day Apple ships a new OS. Shops under 25 Macs save the most, since that is Jamf's paid minimum.

What open source can't replace

MicroMDM and Fleet speak Apple's MDM protocol and cover enrollment, profiles and inventory. What they do not cover is Jamf being ready the morning Apple ships a new OS. Jamf's real product is that release-day readiness plus Protect and Connect. Run open source if you have someone who follows Apple's developer betas. Pay Jamf if a broken enrollment on release day would stop your company.

OSS covers

  • MDM enrollment
  • configuration profiles
  • app deployment
  • hardware inventory

OSS does not cover

  • Jamf Protect macOS threat detection
  • day-one support for new macOS and iOS releases
  • Jamf Connect identity and password sync at login
  • curated Apple VPP and App Store workflows
