What you gain

  • No cloud markup on Postgres hosting and bandwidth
  • Full control over your Postgres instance without platform limits
  • No dependency on Supabase's edge function runtime
  • Self-hosted deployment with identical open source codebase

What you give up

  • No managed Realtime with built-in presence and broadcast channels
  • No Supabase Studio (web-based database GUI and SQL editor)
  • No managed Edge Functions with automatic Deno deployment
  • No integrated Auth, Storage, and Vectors in one dashboard

Switching Cost

Supabase Cloud has the easiest migration story of any BaaS because the entire stack is open source. Your Postgres database is standard Postgres. pg_dump and restore to any Postgres host. Auth, Storage, and Realtime are all self-hostable with Docker Compose. Solo devs can self-host in an afternoon. The real cost is operational: you're now responsible for backups, scaling, security patches, and monitoring that Supabase Cloud handles for you. Teams without a dedicated DevOps person should think carefully about whether the $25/mo is worth the ops burden they're taking on.

Building Blocks

Supabase Cloud is a platform. It bundles multiple capabilities into one subscription. These tools each cover one piece. Teams often assemble 2–3 of them instead of paying for the full suite.
