cue is a floating window on macOS and Windows that watches your screen, listens to your meeting audio, and suggests what to say next. It is a free, self-hosted answer to Cluely, the paid product that made this category briefly famous. GPL-3.0, bring your own API key, and it works against OpenAI, Anthropic, or Gemini.
There is no server. cue runs locally, the key stays on your machine, and the project states it collects nothing. Setup is not quite zero though: the app is ad-hoc signed, so macOS blocks the first launch until you run `xattr -cr` on it, and you grant Microphone and Screen Recording before anything works. Ten minutes, not zero.
Solo users are the whole audience. There is no team version, no admin console, no billing. You pay whichever model provider you point it at, and vision plus meeting-length transcription adds up faster than people expect. Budget real money if you leave it running through a full day of calls.
The catch: the invisibility is one macOS window flag, `setContentProtection`, and the README is refreshingly blunt that this is best-effort rather than guaranteed. On macOS 15.4+ Apple lets some capture tools ignore it, Zoom only respects it on one specific capture setting, and a phone camera always wins. The project is equally blunt that using this during a proctored exam or job interview may break that platform's rules and, in some places, consent law. That part is on you.
Free vs Self-Hosted vs Paid
fully freeFree and GPL-3.0. No cloud tier, no subscription, no telemetry. You supply your own API key for OpenAI, Anthropic, or Gemini and pay that provider directly for usage. Screen vision plus continuous audio transcription is the expensive combination here: a day of meetings can run well past what people assume a "free" tool costs, so check your provider's per-minute audio and per-image rates before you build a habit around it.
Free forever. Your real bill is the model provider, and vision plus audio is not cheap.
