CleanYourTV strips the ads and manufacturer junk off an Android TV or Google TV and swaps the home screen for a clean, Apple TV style launcher. It's free and MIT-licensed. The installer is mostly a prompt: paste PROMPT.md into Claude Code or another coding assistant with shell access, name your TV model, and it finds the TV on Wi-Fi, backs up, debloats and builds the launcher.

Setup is turning on USB debugging and one "allow this computer" tap. Nothing is rooted or uninstalled: packages get switched off with pm disable-user, and a restore script turns them back on. You get a small Python ADB client, per-model debloat lists from other owners, and the launcher as Java source you build yourself (JDK 17 plus the Android SDK). No prebuilt APKs, good call. Fire TV gets the debloat half only; Samsung and LG don't run Android. Solo, household or small office: free.

The catch: most shared lists also disable the update service, so security patches stop until you turn it back on, and you're giving an AI agent a shell on a box in your living room. Read the list first, keep the restore script, and switch debugging off after.

Free vs Self-Hosted vs Paid

fully free

Free: Everything. MIT license covers the prompt, the Python ADB tools, the debloat lists and the launcher source. No account, no telemetry in the launcher, no paid tier.

Self-hosted: Runs from your own computer on the same Wi-Fi as the TV. The tools need Python 3 and three pip packages (adb-shell, rsa, cryptography). Building the launcher needs JDK 17 and Android SDK platform 34; the build script compiles it, pushes it over ADB and makes it the default Home. PowerShell twins of every script cover Windows.

Paid: No paid tier. The prompt route assumes you already have a coding assistant with shell access (Claude Code or similar), which carries its own subscription; the manual scripts skip that entirely. The only money link is a Buy Me a Coffee button.

Free. The only possible cost is the coding assistant you point at the prompt, and the manual scripts work without one.

What to do by team size

Solo
free; one evening, one TV, keep the restore script
Small team
free; reuse the same debloat list across identical sets
Medium team
free, but it's a per-TV hand job with no central management
Large team
not built for fleets; signage and hotel TVs belong in a real device management tool
Self-hosting ops:moderate
