NuvioDesktop
⚠️ Alpha Software - Testers Only
The Lens
By Erik Loyd, SaaS CEO and former COO/CFO of an AWS Premier Partner.

NuvioDesktop is the front end of a self-hosted media setup, not the server behind it. It browses metadata, tracks watch progress, manages collections, handles downloads, and plays streams that come from extensions you install or sources you point it at yourself. Kotlin Multiplatform and Compose Multiplatform under the hood, so Windows, macOS, and Linux run the same codebase. GPL-3.0, free, no account.
Installing it is a download, not a deployment. Grab the MSI, DMG, or DEB from Releases and you are done, which is the opposite of the Jellyfin or Plex story where you stand up a server, point it at a library, and tune transcoding. Nothing to index here, because the app is the front end and the sources do the work. Building from source is a single Gradle command if you would rather compile it yourself.
Here is the part the maintainers put in bold at the top of their own README: this is alpha, testers only, expect breaking changes with every update, not suitable for daily use. Take them at their word. Settings, stored data, and compatibility can change without notice. For something you can hand to your household today, jellyfin/jellyfin is the mature answer and it is also completely free.
The catch is what NuvioDesktop deliberately does not ship. It hosts nothing and indexes nothing, so the experience is entirely a function of which extensions you install, and the project explicitly disclaims affiliation with any of them. That puts both the quality question and the legal question on you. Thin clients are portable by design; they are also only as good as whatever is feeding them.
Free vs Self-Hosted vs Paid
fully freeFree Tier
Everything, such as it is. GPL-3.0, no account, no subscription, no telemetry gate. Desktop builds are published for Windows (MSI), macOS (DMG), and Linux (DEB when available).
Self-Hosted
There is no server component to host. The app runs on your desktop and reads from extensions or sources you supply, so the only cost is the machine you already have plus whatever the sources themselves cost you. If you pair it with your own library, the storage and hardware bill lands on that server, not on this client.
Paid
No paid tier and no cloud service. The commercial comparison is Plex Pass at $7/mo or $70/yr, which buys hardware transcoding, offline sync, and polished TV apps against a media server you still have to run. Note that Plex tripled its lifetime tier to $749.99 on July 1, 2026 and replaced the old $249.99 price point with a 5-year plan, which is its own argument for owning your stack. NuvioDesktop is not competing for that money yet; it is alpha software with no support commitment.
Free and GPL-3.0 with nothing to buy. The real price is instability: the maintainers say testers only, and they mean it.
What to do by team size
- Solo
- free, but alpha; keep a stable player installed alongside it
- Small team
- free for a household, though breaking changes will hit everyone at once
- Medium team
- Not applicable; this is a personal desktop client
- Large team
- Not applicable; no management, no support, no stability guarantee
