Gutenberg is the editor inside every modern WordPress site. Pages, posts, headers and footers are built from blocks you drag, rearrange and style, and it has shipped in WordPress core since 5.0, so you already have it. This repo is where it gets built: the Gutenberg plugin, which gets you new editor features before they reach a WordPress release, plus the @wordpress npm packages. GPL-2.0-or-later and free.

Running it means running WordPress: PHP, MySQL or MariaDB, a host, and updates you apply yourself. The plugin adds little on top of that, but its beta features can break things, so test on staging first. Developers can use the block editor packages outside WordPress (Drupal has a Gutenberg module), but then you bring your own storage, rendering and media handling. That's a project, not a drop-in.

The paid path is WordPress.com, which runs this same editor. Personal is $4/mo billed yearly ($9 month to month), and Business at $25/mo yearly is where SFTP, SSH and Git deployments show up. Solo: free on any host. Small teams: free, or pay WordPress.com to skip the patching. Large teams: WordPress VIP, which is contact-sales.

The catch: the editor is not the CMS. Want a Webflow alternative? You're choosing WordPress, and Gutenberg comes with it. It handles content pages well, but complex marketing layouts are where plenty of teams still add a page builder like Elementor on top.
