codex-with-chatgpt
ChatGPT thinks. Codex works. Use ChatGPT as the planning brain while keeping the Codex harness.
The Lens
By Erik Loyd, SaaS CEO and former COO/CFO of an AWS Premier Partner.
Updated Sep 2026
Arbitrage on quota you already own. A ChatGPT Plus or Pro subscription has web usage sitting idle while your coding agent burns metered Codex tokens on planning and review. This bridge moves the thinking to the subscription and leaves execution with Codex.
Your workspace is exposed over an OAuth-protected, read-only MCP connection. ChatGPT reads exactly the lines it asks for and hands back a plan; the repo is never uploaded and never writable. One-paste install, no API key, no reverse proxy. Maintained by an independent developer, not OpenAI, with bilingual Chinese and English docs.
Install it if you run Codex daily and keep hitting planning limits. The catch is the trust boundary: a third-party bridge with live read access to your working tree is a call most security teams will make for you.
Free vs Self-Hosted vs Paid
fully freeFree (Open Source)
- MIT licensed MCP bridge, one-paste install, no API key required
- OAuth-protected, read-only connection from the ChatGPT web app to your local workspace
- ChatGPT handles planning and review; Codex keeps full ownership of execution
- Repository contents are read on demand rather than uploaded
- Bilingual documentation, English and Chinese
Paid
Nothing from this project. It depends on a ChatGPT subscription you supply: Plus at $20 per month or Pro at $200 per month. Codex execution is billed separately by OpenAI.
Self-Hosted Costs
$0 for the bridge itself. It runs locally alongside your Codex session. The entire point is to shift work onto subscription quota you have already bought instead of metered API spend.
When to Pay
You are already paying OpenAI. This changes which bucket the work comes out of, not whether you pay.
The bridge is free and MIT. It runs on the ChatGPT Plus or Pro subscription you already have, shifting planning off metered Codex spend.
What to do by team size

- Small team
- free
- Medium team
- free, but security review the read-only workspace bridge first
- Large team
- free; most orgs will not approve a third-party bridge with live repo read access
