The Lens

By Erik Loyd, SaaS CEO and former COO/CFO of an AWS Premier Partner.

Updated Oct 2026

Servy turns any program into a real Windows service: a Node server, a Python script, a local LLM. It starts at boot before anyone logs in, restarts the app when it crashes or hangs, rotates its logs, and ships a desktop app, a Manager app with live CPU and RAM graphs, a CLI and a PowerShell module. MIT licensed, free, no paid edition.

It's built as the successor to NSSM, which Servy's author says hasn't been updated in over a decade and stores service settings, passwords included, as readable text in the Registry. Servy encrypts those settings, locks folders down with ACLs, and lets each service read only its own config. Install is winget install servy, or Chocolatey, Scoop and Patch My PC for Intune shops. Releases are code-signed. Next to WinSW, the other free option, you trade XML files for a GUI and monitoring.

Solo: free. Small teams: free, script it with the CLI. Larger teams: free, with gMSA support for domain fleets.

The catch: pace. Servy went from v1.0 to v10 in about thirteen months, and v10.2 rebuilt the security model. Every wrapped service now depends on Servy's own background service. Pin versions on servers.

Free vs Self-Hosted vs Paid

fully free

Free: Everything, MIT. Desktop app, Manager app (live CPU/RAM graphs, log tailing, dependency tree), servy-cli and a PowerShell module. Health checks with auto-restart, pre/post launch and stop hooks, log rotation by size or date, email and OS notifications, heartbeat pings to services like healthchecks.io, and runs as Local System, local or domain accounts, or gMSA.

Self-hosted: Runs locally on each Windows machine. Modern self-contained build for Windows 10 1809+, Windows 11 and Server 2016+ on x64 and ARM64; legacy .NET Framework 4.8 build for Windows 7 SP1, 8.x and Server 2008 R2 on x64. Installer or portable 7z, plus WinGet, Chocolatey, Scoop and Patch My PC (Intune and ConfigMgr). Binaries signed through the SignPath Foundation, SBOM with each release.

Paid: No paid edition. Donations via GitHub Sponsors, PayPal, Liberapay and Buy Me a Coffee. Commercial service wrappers such as FireDaemon Pro are the paid alternative.

Free and MIT with no paid edition. The only cost is keeping up with a release cadence that moved through ten major versions in about a year.
