BRUTAL
A free, open source C# framework for making games, or your own game engine. Direct access to native APIs and Vulkan, with the low-level libraries around them. The foundation under Kitten Space Agency and RimWorld's Waylith engine.

BRUTAL is the C# foundation RocketWerkz built Kitten Space Agency on, and the base Ludeon used for Waylith, the in-house engine moving RimWorld off Unity. It's a framework, not an engine: Vulkan, GLFW, SDL, Dear ImGui, Jolt and Box2D physics, FMOD audio and RakNet networking bindings, plus allocation-free collections, strings, memory and a job system. No editor, no scene graph, no renderer, by design. Free for commercial games, no royalties.
Install from NuGet (dotnet add package Ahwoo.Brutal.Core) on .NET 10, with a Vulkan 1.3 GPU if you render. The README says Windows or Linux; the homepage also lists macOS. You can't build from source yet: project files and build scripts are "coming." Hello world opens an empty window. Everything after that, renderer included, is yours to write.
There's no paid tier, but the license has a price: your credits, NOTICE.txt and the BRUTAL logo before gameplay, unless Ahwoo agrees otherwise. Solo devs: use Godot. Small studios with an engine programmer: worth a look. Larger studios outgrowing Unity: the real audience.
The catch: it went public this month. Open issues already report missing native exports in the Box2D and Jolt bindings, and FMOD may need a separate Firelight license.
Free vs Self-Hosted vs Paid
fully freeFree: Every library, including for commercial games, with no royalties or revenue share. The BRUTAL License v1.0 is MIT plus attribution: the copyright notice in your credits screen, NOTICE.txt shipped with the game, and the unaltered BRUTAL logo shown before gameplay starts, no less prominent than other parties' logos.
Self-hosted: Nothing to host. Libraries ship as NuGet packages under the verified Ahwoo prefix and need the .NET 10 SDK plus a Vulkan 1.3 GPU for rendering. Building from source isn't possible yet; the repo is for reading and forking.
Paid: No paid tier. Ahwoo offers a separate commercial licence (price not published, contact brutal@ahwoo.com) to drop the attribution terms, and waives the logo for non-profit projects or where it gets in the way of the product. Third-party pieces keep their own terms: FMOD use may need a commercial license from Firelight Technologies.
Free for commercial games with no royalties; the cost is a mandatory BRUTAL logo splash and credits line unless you negotiate an unpriced commercial licence. Check FMOD's own licensing if you use the audio bindings.
What to do by team size
- Solo
- free, but most solo devs ship faster on Godot
- Small team
- free if you have an engine programmer comfortable with unsafe C#
- Medium team
- free; a real option for a custom engine without four years of groundwork
- Large team
- free or a negotiated commercial licence to drop the logo splash
