Solid Glass is a dark, smoky-glass theme for shadcn/ui plus a set of components built for AI chat and agent screens: a composer, tool steps, a diff view, a reasoning panel, a context ring, and an ask card for when the agent needs your decision. It is one stylesheet that restyles the shadcn/ui components you already have. MIT licensed, no paid tier, free.

Setup is two commands on an existing shadcn/ui project: npx shadcn@latest add deeplethe/solid-glass/solid-glass, then import the CSS after Tailwind and delete the colour variables shadcn init wrote. It targets React 19, Tailwind CSS 4 and the Base UI flavour of shadcn/ui, so an older Radix-based app is not plug and play. Nothing to host. The docs site has a Create page where you turn dials for thickness, tint, radius and blur and copy out the CSS. Solo, small teams and larger teams: free. Compare it with Vercel's AI Elements or assistant-ui if you want chat components without the opinionated look.

The catch: it's about a week old, has no tagged releases, and nearly every commit comes from one maintainer at a five-month-old org. Pin the install to a commit and expect the look to keep shifting.

Free vs Self-Hosted vs Paid

fully free

Free: Everything is MIT licensed: the solid-glass.css theme, the agent components (composer, tool-steps, diff-view, reasoning, ask-card, context-ring, task-notice, turn-status, status-glyph) and the agent-workspace block. Components that come from shadcn/ui stay under shadcn/ui's MIT license (see NOTICE.md).

Self-hosted: Nothing to run. The shadcn CLI copies the stylesheet and components into your repo straight from GitHub (npx shadcn@latest add deeplethe/solid-glass/<item>), and the same items are served as JSON from the GitHub Pages site for older CLIs. Requires React 19, Tailwind CSS 4 and shadcn/ui's Base UI components. Geist and Geist Mono fonts are optional and free via Fontsource.

Paid: No paid tier, no hosted service, no pro component pack.

Free under MIT with no paid tier. The real cost is moving a project onto React 19, Tailwind CSS 4 and shadcn/ui's Base UI components if it isn't there yet.

What to do by team size

Solo
free; one shadcn add command and a CSS import
Small team
free; pin to a commit so the theme doesn't shift under you
Medium team
free; fork the stylesheet if you need it stable for a product
Large team
free, but a week-old single-maintainer theme is a fork-and-own decision, not a dependency
Self-hosting ops:trivial
