reelmimic

Show it a video you love. Get a new video in the same style. An AI crew (Claude Code or Codex) plans, builds and reviews it with you.

The Lens

ReelMimic copies a video's style, not its footage. Show it a reference clip (a file, a screen recording or a YouTube link) plus a one-line brief, and it breaks down the pacing, shot lengths, colors and transitions, proposes a storyboard for you to approve, then has up to six Claude Code or Codex agents build an original 2D animated video in that style. MIT licensed.

It runs locally on Node 22.18+, Python 3.10+, FFmpeg, Chrome and a logged-in Claude Code or Codex CLI. There's no API bill of its own because all the work spends your existing subscription. That's the real cost: a 30 to 60 second video takes 1 to 3.5 hours of agent time. The agents get broad access too: Claude runs with Bash allowed, and Codex defaults to full-access mode with no approval prompts.

Solo creators already paying for a top-tier Claude or ChatGPT plan who want explainer or social animations get the most here. Anyone on an entry plan will feel the quota drain. For code-driven video you control line by line, Remotion (remotion-dev/remotion) is the established option, with its own commercial license; HyperFrames (heygen-com/hyperframes) powers ReelMimic's vector engine.

The catch: it's a solo project launched in late September 2026 with no releases, tested mostly on Windows, and five of its seven drawing styles are self-described as young. Pulling references from YouTube links via yt-dlp also runs against YouTube's terms, so stick to local files when that matters.

Free vs Self-Hosted vs Paid

fully free

Free: Everything. MIT code; bundled third-party skills keep their own licenses (Apache-2.0 HyperFrames skills, MIT painted-animation, OFL fonts). Remotion skills and Pixabay sounds are deliberately not redistributed.

Self-hosted: Local web app at localhost. Needs Node.js 22.18+, Python 3.10+, FFmpeg, Chrome and a logged-in Claude Code or Codex CLI. No Docker, no GPU requirement stated.

Paid: Nothing from the project. The real cost is your Claude Code or Codex subscription quota: a 30 to 60 second video takes 1 to 3.5 hours with up to six agents in parallel, and jobs pause when you hit a plan limit. Optional keys (Mandarin TTS, Pixabay, Freesound, Upload-Post for publishing) are all optional.

Free under MIT. You pay in Claude Code or Codex quota, and each short video burns hours of it.

What to do by team size

Solo
free if you already pay for a high-usage Claude or ChatGPT plan
Small team
free; run it on a dedicated machine since agents get broad shell access
Medium team
Experimental only; no releases and mostly Windows-tested
Large team
Skip for now; no review process for agent permissions or asset rights
Self-hosting ops:moderate
