CAPE is a malware sandbox: you feed it a suspicious file, it runs that file inside an isolated Windows virtual machine, and it reports everything the file did. Files touched, network traffic, memory dumps, screenshots. What sets it apart from its Cuckoo roots is automatic unpacking and extraction of the malware's hidden config, like the command-and-control addresses analysts actually want. It's the free, self-hosted answer to ANY.RUN, Joe Sandbox and VMRay.

Setup is the opposite of docker run. The docs push an Ubuntu 24.04 host running KVM, built by two install scripts over 3,000 lines combined, and want you to swap hardware ID placeholders first so malware can't tell it's in a VM. Then you build Windows 10 or 11 guests with 32-bit Python. There are no releases: you git pull a rolling branch.

Nothing is paywalled. Solo analysts: free, try the public demo at capesandbox.com first. Small and larger teams: free, but someone has to own that box.

The catch: you are running live malware on purpose. A guest that can reach your LAN is an incident, not a bug report. The docs also warn that updating packages with apt can break the whole install.

Free vs Self-Hosted vs Paid

fully free

Free: Everything. GPL-3.0 source (inherited from Cuckoo Sandbox), the community signatures repo and the CAPE-parsers config extractors. There is also a free public demo instance at capesandbox.com; accounts are activated on request through the project's @capesandbox account on X.

Self-hosted: The only way to run your own. Recommended host is Ubuntu 24.04 LTS with KVM, installed by kvm-qemu.sh (1,397 lines) and cape2.sh (1,852 lines), which also install PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Suricata and YARA. Guests are Windows 10 or Windows 11 23H2 VMs with 32-bit Python, and you supply the Windows licensing. Four systemd services (cape, cape-processor, cape-web, cape-rooter). Rolling release with no versions: you git pull to update. A distributed mode exists for multiple hosts.

Paid: No paid tier or commercial edition. The paid alternatives are hosted commercial sandboxes such as ANY.RUN, Joe Sandbox and VMRay.

Free with no paid tier. The real cost is a dedicated KVM host plus the engineer-hours to build Windows guest VMs and keep a rolling-release install from breaking.

What to do by team size

Solo
free; start with the public capesandbox.com demo, build your own only if you analyze samples every week
Small team
free if one person can own a dedicated KVM host and its Windows guests
Medium team
free; budget part of an engineer for upkeep, guest images and signature updates
Large team
free, with distributed mode across hosts, or pay a hosted sandbox to skip the ops
Self-hosting ops:heavy
