The RDS for Db2 MCP server lets an AI assistant query Amazon RDS for Db2, IBM's database as a managed AWS service. It connects over SSL with credentials from AWS Secrets Manager, runs read-only SQL by default and fetches table schemas. Setup needs the RDS certificate bundle and VPC network access.

The MCP is free. The database starts at $0.036/hour (db.t3.small) before any IBM license. Official AWS Labs code, worth installing for Db2 shops.

The catch: PyPI holds only a 0.0.0 placeholder, so the documented uvx install fails today. Read-only is a keyword filter; use a read-only Db2 user.

Cost Breakdown

fully free

Free: The MCP server is Apache 2.0, maintained by AWS Labs in the awslabs/mcp monorepo.

Self-hosted: Runs locally through uvx awslabs.db2-mcp-server@latest once a real version is published (PyPI currently has only a 0.0.0 placeholder with no code). Needs AWS credentials allowed to call rds:DescribeDBInstances and secretsmanager:GetSecretValue, the RDS regional SSL certificate bundle, and network reach to port 50443 (same VPC, peering, or an SSM tunnel).

Paid: You pay for Amazon RDS for Db2. On-demand instances start at $0.036/hour for a db.t3.small (Single-AZ, US East N. Virginia), about $26/month if left running, plus storage. That price excludes the Db2 license: Community Edition is available from IBM at no additional cost on small instance classes, while Standard and Advanced Edition need your own IBM license (BYOL) or an hourly license through AWS Marketplace, billed on the Marketplace section of your AWS bill.

The MCP is free, but RDS for Db2 instance prices exclude the IBM license. Community Edition is free on small instances; Standard and Advanced need your own IBM license or an hourly AWS Marketplace subscription billed separately.
