The Open Source Drop Lens
Connects an AI assistant to a Microsoft SQL Server database running on AWS RDS. It runs read-only by default, allows writes only behind an explicit flag, and adds schema introspection and SQL injection guards.
The point is letting an assistant query your real schema and inspect tables without you hand-writing SQL. Setup is heavy: it needs AWS credentials, RDS instance details, and database logins stored in AWS Secrets Manager.
The server is free and Apache-2.0, and runs against an RDS instance you already pay for, so there is no new cost.
Maintained by AWS in the official awslabs/mcp repository.
Worth it for AWS shops running SQL Server on RDS. It is scoped only to RDS, so it will not help when your database lives anywhere else.
Cost Breakdown
**The MCP server:** Free and Apache-2.0.
**Underlying service:** Microsoft SQL Server on AWS RDS, which you already pay for (RDS compute plus SQL Server licensing). The server adds no incremental cost beyond your existing RDS instance.
Free and open source. The underlying service may have its own costs.
