The Git server lets an AI assistant work a local repository directly: status, staged and unstaged diffs, diffs against other branches, log with date filters, show, branch listing and creation, checkout, add, reset and commit.
Run it with uvx mcp-server-git against any local repo. No GitHub account, no API keys, no costs. It has no push, pull or other remote operations.
The MCP steering group maintains it, and its README says it is in early development with tools subject to change. Install it when your client has no Git tooling of its own. Coding agents that already run git through a shell get little from it.
