Memory gives your AI assistant a notebook that survives between chats. It stores a small knowledge graph of entities, the relations between them and facts attached to each, then lets the model search and open those nodes later.
Install it with npx or Docker. Everything lives in one local JSONL file, and MEMORY_FILE_PATH puts that file somewhere you control and back up. No accounts, no service costs.
The MCP steering group maintains it as a basic reference implementation. It works well for personal context like preferences and project facts. Need semantic search, sync across machines or memory shared by a team? That is a different class of tool.
