nRF Connect SDK is Nordic Semiconductor's official kit for writing firmware for its wireless chips, the nRF52, nRF53, nRF54, nRF70 and nRF91 families inside trackers, wearables, smart locks and cellular sensors. It sits on Zephyr, a tiny real-time operating system for microcontrollers, and adds Bluetooth LE, Thread, Matter, Wi-Fi, LTE-M/NB-IoT and DECT NR+ support plus a secure bootloader. It costs nothing.

Setup is friendlier than most embedded toolchains. The nRF Connect for VS Code extension installs the SDK and a matching toolchain in one go; the command-line route uses nRF Util and SEGGER J-Link. Pin a stable release tag, don't track main.

There's no paid SDK tier. Nordic makes its money on chips and sells nRF Cloud separately for device management and over-the-air updates. Solo and small teams: free, buy a dev kit. Larger teams shipping products: still free, but assign someone to track SDK upgrades and Nordic's security advisories.

The catch: Nordic's own code isn't open source in the usual sense. Its license says it must only be used with a Nordic chip, and the binary libraries can't be reverse engineered. Want vendor freedom? Start from upstream Zephyr (Apache 2.0, still supports Nordic boards) or ESP-IDF on Espressif chips.

Free vs Self-Hosted vs Paid

fully free

Free: The whole SDK is free on GitHub. Nordic's own code is under LicenseRef-Nordic-5-Clause (BSD-style, but restricted to Nordic chips); Zephyr and many bundled upstream modules keep their Apache 2.0 licenses. Latest stable release is v3.4.1 (September 17, 2026), and the repo gets commits daily.

Self-hosted: Runs on your development machine (Windows, Linux or macOS). Install through the nRF Connect for VS Code extension, or by command line with nRF Util plus SEGGER J-Link. You need a Nordic dev kit or board to flash and debug.

Paid: No paid tier for the SDK. The costs are Nordic chips and dev kits, plus optional services: nRF Cloud (device management, OTA updates, observability, location) is sold separately with a "Get started free" entry point. We could not verify nRF Cloud's paid tiers because its pricing page sits behind a bot check.

Free to use, including in commercial products, as long as the code runs on Nordic chips. The real spend is hardware and, optionally, nRF Cloud for fleet management.

What to do by team size

Solo
free; VS Code extension plus a Nordic dev kit
Small team
free; pin a stable release and upgrade on purpose
Medium team
free; add nRF Cloud or Memfault only if you need fleet OTA and crash reporting
Large team
free SDK; staff someone to track SDK upgrades and Nordic security advisories
