NullMoth's driver gets modern NVIDIA GeForce cards running Metal on macOS 15 Sequoia and 26 Tahoe, on Intel Macs and OpenCore PCs. It covers GTX 16 and RTX 20 through 50 cards by translating Apple's shaders for NVK, Mesa's open Vulkan driver, on top of NVIDIA's own open kernel modules. Free, source included.

Installing it means switching off the locks macOS uses to keep unsigned code out of the kernel: SIP bits, AMFI checks and Secure Boot. The 1401 Mac app edits your OpenCore config, backs it up, and adds a "Remove NVIDIA driver" boot entry. Keep it. Releases land several times a day; 2.3.2 broke enough desktops that 2.3.3 rolled back.

No paid tier, just a tip jar. The license is PolyForm Noncommercial: personal, research and nonprofit use only. Solo tinkerers with a spare OpenCore box: free. Small and larger teams: no, the license bars commercial use.

The catch: an anonymous developer, an account under a month old, unsigned kernel code with no public build pipeline, and three rounds of security fixes in four days. Through 1.x any local app could read and write kernel memory. Then 2.3.7 fixed a video decoder bug reachable from a web page. Weekend machine only.

Free vs Self-Hosted vs Paid

source available

Free: Everything: the kernel extensions, the Metal plugin, the shader translator, and the 1401 Mac app that installs them (now its own project, also PolyForm Noncommercial). No account, no paid tier; the developer takes tips through Buy Me a Coffee. The driver code is PolyForm Noncommercial 1.0.0, so personal, research, educational and nonprofit use is allowed and any commercial use is not. The shader translator is LGPL-3.0 (based on metal2vulkan), the Mesa changes are MIT, and NVIDIA's GSP firmware ships unmodified under NVIDIA's licence.

Self-hosted: You run it on your own Intel Mac or OpenCore PC on macOS 15 Sequoia; the installer also accepts macOS 26 Tahoe. OpenCore must disable Secure Boot, set SIP bits 0x0A43, add AMFI boot arguments and load Lilu plus AMFIPass. Releases are tarballs of roughly 270 MB checked against a SHA256SUMS file on the same release page; only the 1401 app's zip carries a separate signature file. The driver repo has no GitHub Actions workflows, and the 2.3.7 security source sits on a separate branch ahead of main.

Paid: No paid tier and no commercial licence on offer. Your only cost is the hardware and your time when a boot goes black.

Free for personal and nonprofit use, with no paid option at all; the PolyForm Noncommercial license rules out any business use.

What to do by team size

Solo
free for a spare OpenCore machine you can afford to reinstall; stay on the newest release and keep the remove-driver boot entry
Small team
not licensed: PolyForm Noncommercial bars commercial use
Medium team
not licensed for business use; buy Macs with supported GPUs instead
Large team
not licensed, and a kernel driver that needs SIP and AMFI off has no place on managed fleets
Self-hosting ops:heavy
