Aerial is a tvOS-style home screen for the Xiaomi, TCL and other TVs sold in China, whose stock launchers are wall-to-wall show recommendations and membership badges. You get a clock, your apps in a grid, Bing's photo of the day or your own wallpaper, and Apple TV's aerial films as the screensaver. No ads, no feeds. It's MIT licensed and free.

Install takes ADB and a few minutes: flip on debugging with the brand-specific button combo from the README, then paste a prompt into Claude Code or Codex, run the one-line curl | bash installer, or adb install the APK from GitHub releases. Solo or a household, it's free per TV. Google TV owners have Free My TV for the same job. LG, Samsung and Huawei sets aren't supported.

The catch: it stays in charge by fighting the firmware. It holds secure-settings access, an accessibility service, a notification listener used only to restart itself, and an optional switch that turns ADB back on whenever Xiaomi shuts it off. The APKs are hand-built, five releases landed in a single day, and a firmware update can undo the takeover.

Free vs Self-Hosted vs Paid

fully free

Free: Everything. MIT licensed, no account, no paid tier, no in-app purchases. The site bills it as "Open source · Free · No ads".

Self-hosted: It runs on your TV. Turn on ADB (Xiaomi, TCL, Haier, OPPO and generic Android TV steps are in the README), then install with an AI agent prompt, the one-line curl | bash installer from aerial.qust.me, or by hand with the aerial-standard.apk (or aerial-guard.apk for firmwares that refuse launchers) from GitHub releases or aerial.qust.me. Android TV 5.0+.

Paid: No paid tier. It streams Apple's aerial films from Apple's servers (about 15 to 20 Mbps at 1080p) and pulls wallpapers from Bing and weather from Open-Meteo, all free.

Free and MIT licensed with no paid tier. The real cost is bandwidth: the aerial screensaver streams 1080p video at about 15 to 20 Mbps.

What to do by team size

Solo
free; one install command per TV once ADB is on
Small team
free; repeat per TV
Medium team
free, but each TV is a hand install over ADB and firmware updates can undo it
Large team
not built for fleets of screens; use a managed signage or MDM product
Self-hosting ops:moderate
