Rerun
Visualize, query, and stream to train on multimodal robotics data.

Rerun is a visual debugger for anything with sensors. Log images, point clouds, 3D transforms, joint states, and time series from Python, Rust, or C++, and the viewer replays them on one shared timeline so you can scrub to the exact frame where the robot decided a wall was a door. pip install rerun-sdk is the whole install, and it is free under Apache-2.0 and MIT.
There is nothing to operate. The viewer is a desktop binary or a browser tab, recordings are .rrd files on disk, and the query layer runs locally over columnar storage with SQL and dataframe APIs. It reads MCAP, so existing robot logs load without rewriting your instrumentation.
Solo researchers and small robotics teams get the whole thing for nothing, and the free tier is the actual product rather than a trial. Larger teams needing a shared catalog, dataset streaming to GPUs, SSO, and single-tenant hosting are looking at Rerun Hub, quoted per deployment with no published price.
The catch is churn. The project says outright to expect breaking changes, the viewer bogs down with too many entities or multi-million point clouds, and a hard fork already exists: Flaminis/Dalaran is ROS 2 native and reads the same .rrd recordings. Pin your version.
Free vs Self-Hosted vs Paid
open coreFree
The entire open source toolchain, and it is not a stripped tier. Python, Rust, and C++ SDKs, the interactive viewer on desktop and in the browser, SQL and dataframe queries, the local catalog, and the .rrd columnar format. Dual licensed Apache-2.0 and MIT. pip install rerun-sdk gets you the SDK and the viewer together; C++ and Rust install the rerun binary separately via cargo. Support is Discord and GitHub.
Cloud Pricing
Rerun Hub is the commercial product and publishes no price. It is quoted per deployment based on team size and data scale. What the contract buys: managed cloud running the same APIs, a persistent catalog backed by your own S3-compatible storage, byte-range indexing across object stores, dataset streaming to GPUs from cloud storage, team link sharing, authentication and SSO, single-tenant deployment in the region you pick, and professional support. Academic and research discounts are available on request. Note that the README describes Hub as available to a few select design partners, so treat availability as gated, not self-serve.
Self-Hosted Costs
Effectively zero for one developer, because the viewer and SDK run on your machine and recordings are files on disk. At team scale the cost moves to storage and transfer rather than software: multimodal robot logs are large, so a shared S3 or R2 bucket plus egress is the real line item. The open source catalog is local, so plan on writing your own sync, naming, and retention scripts if several people need to find the same recording.
When to Pay
Hub earns its money when a team needs one shared queryable catalog across many recordings, when training jobs should stream datasets instead of copying them, or when SSO and single-tenant hosting are procurement requirements. Individual developers, researchers, and small teams should not pay. Rerun says explicitly that the open source project targets individual developers and the commercial product targets teams building and running CV and robotics products, and the free side is not crippled to force the upgrade.
The free SDK and viewer cover individual developers completely; Rerun Hub is custom quoted per deployment and gated to selected partners.
What to do by team size
- Solo
- free; nothing meaningful is held back
- Small team
- free; the open source project is aimed at exactly this
- Medium team
- free until several people need one shared catalog
- Large team
- Rerun Hub, custom quoted; ask about single-tenant hosting and SSO
