The Lens

Doory is a Canva-style design editor you can run yourself: posters, social posts, slides, resumes, business cards and short animations, exported as PNG, PDF, MP4 or GIF. There's no paid plan, no watermark, and no account needed to start. A free hosted copy runs at doory.art.

Self-hosting is a Docker Compose stack: a Django API, a real-time server for live co-editing, Postgres and nginx. Set two secrets, bring it up, create an admin. Then seed it, because a new site starts empty: fonts, icons, the background-removal model and templates are each separate download commands. Brand kits, share links, comments and version history all come free.

Solo: use the hosted site. Small teams: self-host to keep designs on your server. Larger teams: not yet. Sign-in is email or Google, no SAML or OIDC, and ten starter templates is a long way from Canva.

The catch is the license. It's the Attribution Assurance License, not MIT, and the author reads it as requiring a visible "Doory by Siam" credit in the running app for anyone who hosts it for users. Fine internally, a dealbreaker for white-labeling. The NOTICE file even calls the code MIT, contradicting the LICENSE. And it's five days old.

Free vs Self-Hosted vs Paid

fully free

Free: Everything: the editor, animation and video export, real-time co-editing, comments, version history and brand kits. The project says it has "no paid plan, no locked features and no ads". Guests can design without an account (work saved in the browser); the hosted site at doory.art is free.

Self-hosted: Docker Compose (Django API, a real-time ASGI server, Postgres, nginx; Redis and S3-compatible storage optional), or a manual Debian/Ubuntu install with systemd. A new site starts empty: fonts, icon packs, the background-removal model, audio and the ten starter templates are pulled in with separate manage.py commands. Server-side PDF export needs headless Chromium. Defaults: 2 GB storage per user and 25 MB per upload, both configurable.

Paid: No paid tier. Stock photo search needs your own Unsplash or Pexels API key. Licensing cost is attribution: anyone hosting it for users must show the "Doory by Siam" credit in the app.

Free with nothing gated; the real price is the Attribution Assurance License, which requires a visible author credit in any copy you host for users, so it can't be white-labeled.

What to do by team size

Solo
free; use the hosted site at doory.art, no account needed
Small team
free; self-host with Docker Compose to keep designs on your server, keeping the author credit visible
Medium team
free, but Google sign-in is the only SSO and the template library is tiny; pilot before replacing Canva
Large team
not yet; no SAML/OIDC, days-old project, and the attribution license rules out rebranding
