Free My TV swaps the ad-stuffed Google TV home screen for a clean one: your streaming apps on a shelf, hourly trending picks from apps you already have, weather, and a look that darkens at sunset. No sponsored rows, no autoplay promos. It's MIT licensed and free. LG and Samsung TVs get the same design as an app beside the stock home screen.

Setup is a real project. You turn on developer mode and USB debugging, then build the APK yourself with a JDK and the Android SDK (there's no prebuilt Google TV download), or let Claude Code do the building and installing for you. Trending picks need a free TMDB key. Nothing is uninstalled: the stock launcher and promo apps are switched off, and one button brings them back. Solo or a household, it's free per TV. For China-market sets that ship without Google TV, look at Aerial.

The catch: the switch runs through the TV's own debugging port, so debugging stays on and the app holds shell-level control of your TV. The project is days old, run by one maintainer, and the home screen shows Binance crypto prices unless you turn them off.

Free vs Self-Hosted vs Paid

fully free

Free: Everything. MIT licensed, no account, no paid tier. The FAQ on freemytv.io answers "Is it free?" with "Yes. MIT license, and the TMDB key is free too."

Self-hosted: It runs on your TV, nowhere else. Google TV / Android TV (Android 9+): build the APK from source with ./build.sh (JDK 17+, Android SDK build-tools 34, adb), then adb install. LG webOS 3+ installs through LG's Developer Mode (lasts about 40 days, press EXTEND to renew); Samsung Tizen 3+ (2017 and newer) installs through the community TizenBrew Installer. The v1.0.0 release ships prebuilt .ipk (LG) and .wgt (Samsung) files, uploaded by hand rather than built in CI.

Paid: No paid tier. It calls three outside services: TMDB for picks (free key you request yourself), Open-Meteo for weather, and Binance's public price API (on by default, show_crypto=false turns it off).

Free and MIT licensed, with no paid tier. The only key you need is a free TMDB key for the trending picks.

What to do by team size

Solo
free; about ten minutes per TV if you can build an Android app or let Claude Code do it
Small team
free; repeat the install on each TV
Medium team
free, but every TV is a hand install over adb with debugging left on
Large team
not built for fleets of screens; use a managed signage or MDM product
Self-hosting ops:moderate
