WordCraft is a Microsoft Word lookalike written from scratch in Rust: the ribbon, styles, track changes, tables of contents, citations and mail merge, and it opens and saves .docx. It runs on Mac, Windows, Linux, FreeBSD and in the browser, free under MIT or Apache 2.0 with no paid tier.

Nothing to host. Grab a signed installer and go. It also imports old .doc files, exports PDF with real selectable text, and ships a command line tool plus an MCP server, so an AI agent can convert, inspect or edit documents with the same commands the ribbon uses.

Solo writers who just need to open and edit a .docx without a Microsoft 365 subscription can try it today. Small teams swapping contracts with Word users: not yet. The team's own roadmap rates it about 60% ready for real work, and its .docx support has never been tested against a corpus of real-world files. No VBA, no real-time co-authoring. LibreOffice Writer and ONLYOFFICE are the mature free picks.

The catch: it's barely a week old and written largely with Claude. Expect crashes, Windows startup bugs and layout that shifts when a file goes back to Word. Keep the original.

Free vs Self-Hosted vs Paid

fully free

Free: Everything. Dual licensed MIT OR Apache-2.0, no account, no paid tier, and spelling and grammar run offline. The ArtCraft logos are trademarked and must be removed from modified builds you distribute.

Self-hosted: Nothing to host. Desktop builds for macOS (universal DMG, signed and notarized), Windows (x64, arm64 and 32-bit MSI or portable zip, code-signed), Linux (AppImage, deb, rpm, Flatpak, tarball on x86_64 and aarch64, plus riscv64) and FreeBSD, plus a WebAssembly build you can put on any static web server. Command line tool and MCP server included.

Paid: None for WordCraft. The same team sells ArtCraft, a separate AI image and video studio on monthly credits; it unlocks nothing in WordCraft. Versus Microsoft 365, the maintainers estimate WordCraft is about 60% of the way to replacing Word for real work (about 55% for a typical professional's weekly work), so it saves you the subscription only if your documents are simple.

Free under MIT or Apache 2.0 with no paid tier. Fine for opening and editing simple .docx files; keep Word or LibreOffice for documents you exchange with clients until it leaves alpha.

What to do by team size

Solo
free; good for opening and editing .docx without a Microsoft 365 subscription
Small team
free to try, but keep Word or LibreOffice for files you trade with clients
Medium team
Not ready: no co-authoring, no VBA, .docx untested on real-world files
Large team
Not ready for managed fleets or macro-based templates; revisit after beta
Self-hosting ops:trivial
