tt-metal
:metal: TT-NN operator library, and TT-Metalium low level kernel programming model.

TT-Metal is the open source software stack for Tenstorrent's AI accelerator cards, the company's answer to NVIDIA's CUDA. TT-NN is a Python and C++ library of neural network operations; TT-Metalium is the low-level layer for writing your own kernels on the chip. Apache 2.0 and free.
It does nothing without Tenstorrent hardware. Setup means a kernel driver, firmware and, for Blackhole systems, Ubuntu 22.04. The TT-Installer script handles most of it, or you pass the device into their Docker image. Tenstorrent also runs an evaluation cloud with no public rates.
The software is free; the hardware is the bill. Blackhole p100a cards start at $999, p150 at $1,399, and the QuietBox 2 workstation is $9,999. Solo: one card is the cheapest way into a non-NVIDIA AI stack you can read down to the metal. Small teams: worth it only if owning the kernel layer matters. Larger teams: talk to Tenstorrent about Galaxy servers or their cloud.
The catch: it's pre-1.0 and moves daily. Dev builds ship every night, the README's release table still shows a March release as the latest, and Tenstorrent says Blackhole optimization is still under active development. Expect to read source, not polished docs.
Free vs Self-Hosted vs Paid
fully freeFree: All of TT-Metal (TT-NN and TT-Metalium) is Apache 2.0 with no paid software tier. pip install ttnn installs the Python API; Docker images are published on GitHub Container Registry.
Self-hosted: Runs only on Tenstorrent hardware in your own machine: install the TT-KMD kernel driver and firmware via the TT-Installer script, or use the Docker image with --device /dev/tenstorrent. Blackhole and Galaxy systems require Ubuntu 22.04 and Python 3.10. Tenstorrent Cloud offers remote instances (1 to 128 Wormhole processors, 1 to 32 Blackhole processors) for evaluation, with no published rates.
Paid: The cost is the hardware, bought from tenstorrent.com. Blackhole p100a $999, p150a or p150b $1,399. Wormhole n150s $999, n150d $1,099, n300s $1,399, n300d $1,449. TT-QuietBox 2 (Blackhole) workstation $9,999. Cards list as shipping in 2 weeks plus 2 to 5 weeks transit.
The software is free under Apache 2.0; the entry ticket is a Tenstorrent card at $999 (Blackhole p100a) or a $9,999 QuietBox 2 workstation.
What to do by team size
- Solo
- free software; budget $999+ for a card if you want a non-NVIDIA stack to learn on
- Small team
- free software; worth the hardware only if you need kernel-level control or are betting on Tenstorrent
- Medium team
- free software; evaluate on Tenstorrent Cloud before buying a QuietBox
- Large team
- free software; Galaxy servers and cloud capacity through Tenstorrent sales
