Unreal Agent is a Go library and command-line runner for building coding agents, the plumbing behind tools like codex exec or claude -p. Its twist is async tool calls: a slow command runs in the background while the model keeps working, instead of burning turns waiting. Sessions are saved, append-only and forkable. MIT, from Unreal Labs.

It plugs into OpenAI, OpenRouter, Fireworks and Ollama, or reuses a Codex ChatGPT login. The tool set is deliberately small: a shell, image viewing and skills. The company's own benchmarks claim Codex-level scores at up to 40% lower cost. Those numbers are self-reported.

Teams building their own agent harness in Go, or chasing cost per task: worth reading and forking. People who just want a coding agent should use Codex or Claude Code directly.

The catch: the official Docker image is published as unrea1labs, with the digit 1 where the l should be, and someone else holds the correctly spelled name on Docker Hub. Install from the Go module or GitHub releases instead, and note the repo hasn't moved since its first week.
