The Lens

By Erik Loyd, SaaS CEO and former COO/CFO of an AWS Premier Partner.

Gortex indexes your repos into a graph of symbols, call chains, routes and cross-service contracts, then serves it to your coding agent so it queries the graph instead of reading whole files. It claims 257 languages, but only about 31 get full parsing; most of the rest are signature-only.

It's one Go binary with no Docker or database: curl install, then gortex init per repo. No service costs; it runs locally under Apache 2.0, maintained by one main developer with real contributors.

Worth installing, but the default hook mode blocks your agent's own Read and Grep on indexed files, so use --hook-mode=enrich if that bites.

Free vs Self-Hosted vs Paid

fully free

Free: Everything. Apache-2.0, single static binary for macOS, Linux and Windows, no account. The site says it is free for everyone, including commercial use.

Self-hosted: Runs locally as a daemon with an in-process SQLite graph. No Docker, database or GPU. Optional LLM features are off by default and use your own provider (local llama.cpp, Ollama, or a hosted API). Large repos are memory hungry: indexing the Linux kernel peaked around 5 GB of heap on the maintainer's laptop.

Paid: None. No hosted tier or enterprise edition exists.
