GrapesJS
Free and Open source Web Builder Framework. Next generation tool for building templates without coding

GrapesJS is the drag-and-drop editor you put inside your own product, not a website builder you sign up for. It ships the canvas, block manager, style manager, layer tree, code viewer, and asset manager as a BSD-3 licensed JavaScript library. Free, no key, no session cap, and shipping since 2016.
You supply everything around it. Storage, publishing, hosting, templates, user accounts, and asset uploads are yours to build, and the plugin ecosystem is large precisely because the core stops at the editor. Budget weeks, not days, to get from a working init call to something a customer would touch.
Solo devs and small teams building a builder get a lot for nothing. Bigger teams should price the alternative first: the same maintainers sell Studio SDK, a finished embeddable editor with support attached, whose free tier stops at 1,000 sessions a month with Studio branding. Startup is $200/month and Business is $2,000/month.
The catch is what this is not. GrapesJS does not replace Webflow for anyone who just wants a website: no hosting, no CMS, no publish button. What it replaces is the six months you would spend writing a visual editor from scratch. webstudio-is/webstudio is where to look for the finished product.
Free vs Self-Hosted vs Paid
open coreFree
The grapesjs npm package is BSD-3-Clause and unrestricted. Canvas, block manager, style manager, layer manager, code viewer, asset manager, local and remote storage hooks, and the plugin API. No license key, no session ceiling, no domain limit. Official wrappers like @grapesjs/react and the export, filestack, and ckeditor plugins are free too.
Paid
GrapesJS Studio SDK is the commercial product: a finished editor you embed, with the GrapesJS team's support included.
Free: $0, 1,000 sessions/month, 1 domain, 100 MB storage, Studio branding, $50 per extra 1,000 sessions.
Startup: $200/month, or $1,800/year prepaid. 20,000 sessions/month, 2 domains, 10 GB storage, custom branding, priority email support, $20 per extra 1,000 sessions.
Business: $2,000/month, or $18,000/year prepaid. 50,000 sessions/month, 2 domains plus wildcards, 100 GB storage, dedicated Slack channel, $10 per extra 1,000 sessions.
Enterprise: custom pricing, unlimited sessions and storage, 24x7 phone support.
Separately, the hosted Studio app at app.grapesjs.com (a no-code site builder, not the SDK) runs $10/month, or $8.33/month billed annually, with a free plan capped at 100 AI credits and 0.1 GB.
Self-Hosted Costs
The core library is a bundle you ship with your app, so infrastructure cost is whatever your app already costs. The real spend is engineering. Plan on weeks of work to build storage, publishing, template management, and asset uploads around the editor, then ongoing maintenance as your component library grows. That is the number to compare against a Studio SDK license, not a server bill.
When to Pay
$200/month is roughly two hours of senior engineering time, so the build-versus-buy math tips toward Studio SDK fast if you are shipping a builder as a product feature. Stay on the core library when your editor needs custom components the SDK does not model, when you cannot ship vendor branding on a free tier, or when 1,000 sessions a month is honestly all the traffic you have.
The core library is free forever under BSD-3; the finished Studio SDK jumps to $200/month the moment you pass 1,000 sessions.
What to do by team size
- Solo
- free; the core library is all you need
- Small team
- free, but budget weeks to build the product around it
- Medium team
- price Studio SDK at $200/month against your own engineering time
- Large team
- Studio SDK Business or Enterprise, unless the editor itself is your differentiator
