Frappe CRM

Fully featured, open source CRM

The Lens

By Erik Loyd, SaaS CEO and former COO/CFO of an AWS Premier Partner.

Updated Aug 2026

Frappe CRM tracks leads, deals, and every conversation around them, with one difference from the SaaS incumbents that matters: pricing is per server, not per seat. The software is AGPL and complete, no feature gating, from the same team behind ERPNext. Calls, emails, notes, and tasks land on one activity page per deal instead of scattered tabs.

Self-hosting means operating a full Frappe stack: MariaDB, Redis, background workers, a scheduler. Docker Compose gets you running, but upgrades go through Frappe's bench tooling and you're pinned to matching framework versions. Fine with someone who does ops; not a drop-a-binary situation. Frappe Cloud hosts it from $5/mo with unlimited users, which is the number to hold against HubSpot's per-seat math.

Solo: overkill unless you're already in the Frappe ecosystem. Small sales teams: this is where per-seat SaaS pricing hurts most and where the switch pays off fastest. Teams already on ERPNext: the integration is native, use it.

The catch: you're adopting a framework, not just a CRM. Customization means learning Frappe's DocType model, and AGPL needs a legal read if you're embedding it in something you sell.

Free vs Self-Hosted vs Paid

free self hosted paid cloud

Free (self-hosted): The full product under AGPL-3.0. No feature gating; Frappe does not run an open-core model. You operate the stack: MariaDB, Redis, workers, scheduler.

Paid (Frappe Cloud): Sites plan from $5/mo (shared servers, unlimited users, priced per compute). Servers plan from $40/mo (dedicated VM, auto-scaling, snapshots). 14-day free trial.

The math: HubSpot Sales Hub and Salesforce charge per seat. Frappe charges per server. A 20-person sales team on a $40/mo server beats any per-seat SaaS by an order of magnitude, if someone owns the ops.

Free self-hosted with zero feature gating. Frappe Cloud from $5/mo, priced per compute, not per seat.
