What you gain

  • No per channel billing, so connecting Instagram, LinkedIn, and TikTok costs the same as connecting one
  • Unlimited queued posts instead of ten per channel on the free plan
  • Approval workflows without moving to the Team plan at $10 per channel per month
  • Your drafts, queue, and posting history stay in a database you control

What you give up

  • You register your own developer apps and clear Instagram and TikTok API review yourself
  • No Buffer AI Assistant for caption rewrites or reply suggestions
  • No cross channel benchmark analytics or best time to post recommendations
  • Setup and maintenance overhead

Switching Cost

Buffer holds almost nothing you cannot rebuild. Your posts already live on the social networks, so the only things to move are a queue of scheduled drafts and some analytics history, and Buffer exports both. The real cost is the OAuth apps. Every self-hosted scheduler makes you register your own developer application with each network, and Instagram and TikTok run those through a review process that takes one to three weeks and rejects vague use case descriptions. Someone posting only to Mastodon and X can be live in an afternoon. Anyone who needs Instagram should start the API approval before they cancel anything.
