Plane is a self-hostable project tracker for the work most teams buy Jira or Linear for: work items, cycles (sprints), modules, pages for docs, intake for triage, and five layouts including board, calendar and Gantt. The open source Community Edition is AGPL v3 and free with no user cap. The free cloud plan stops at 12 users.

Self-hosting runs on Docker Compose or Kubernetes, and it's a real stack: 13 services, including Postgres, Valkey, RabbitMQ and an S3-style object store. Fine if you already run containers.

The free tier is thinner than the marketing suggests. GitHub, GitLab and Slack sync, custom properties, the workspace wiki and time tracking start at Pro: $6/seat/month billed yearly, $8 month to month. SAML or OIDC SSO, workflows and intake forms sit in Business at $13 yearly or $15 monthly. LDAP and audit logs are Enterprise Grid, quote only. Solo and small teams: free. Need integrations: Pro. Need SSO: Business.

The catch: paid features aren't in the open source code. Upgrading a self-hosted install means switching to the closed Commercial Edition, with a 10-seat minimum on new licenses. Five people wanting GitHub sync on their own server pay for ten.

Free vs Self-Hosted vs Paid

Free: Cloud Free is $0 for up to 12 users: projects, work items, cycles, modules, five layouts (list, board, calendar, Gantt, spreadsheet), intake, estimates and project pages, with no AI credits. The self-hosted Community Edition is AGPL v3, has no seat limit, and matches Cloud Free on features.

Self-hosted: Community Edition via Docker Compose or Kubernetes (Helm), 13 services including Postgres 15, Valkey, RabbitMQ, an S3-compatible object store and a proxy. Paid plans are not available on Community: you switch to the closed-source Commercial Edition, which runs on its own codebase and includes 12 free seats per workspace. Commercial uses the same per-seat prices as cloud, and new purchases since April 24, 2026 carry a 10-seat minimum (so Pro is at least $720/year billed yearly). The Airgapped edition has a 100-seat minimum.

Paid: Pro $6/seat/month billed yearly or $8 monthly: work item types, project-level custom properties, workspace wiki, time tracking, templates, dashboards, initiatives, teamspaces, GitHub/GitLab/Slack integrations, 5 guests per paid member, 500 AI credits per seat per month. Business $13/seat/month yearly or $15 monthly: SAML and OIDC SSO, a single workflow per project, project templates, recurring work items, intake email and forms, releases, 1,000 AI credits per seat. Enterprise Grid is quote only: LDAP, group sync, multiple workflows with approvals, granular access control, API-enabled audit logs, private or managed deployments. Pro and Business have a two-week free trial.

Free with no user cap if you self-host Community Edition, or up to 12 users on cloud. Integrations start at Pro ($6/seat/month yearly, $8 monthly) and SSO at Business ($13 yearly, $15 monthly), and new self-hosted licenses require at least 10 seats.
